Anyone who has been pregnant before can agree that pregnancy is not always comfortable. Between aches, pains, nausea and a rapidly expanding waistline, women are up against a lot. And the issue of comfort can be further exacerbated by the wrong clothes. Many women struggle to find the balance between comfort and style when dressing themselves through the different stages of their pregnancy, but the good news is that there are trendy and movable options that look great on everyone. Today we are going to talk about maternity dresses and how to style them.
Dresses vs. Pants
Anyone who has been through a pregnancy before will likely agree that when it comes to fashion, dresses are the way to go. They are versatile, can carry you through all three trimesters, and won’t feel restrictive on your growing bump. Not to mention how much easier they are to get on when you are in the latest stages of your pregnancy. Seriously, putting on pants at eight or nine months is no easy feat. The key here is to find a few different styles of dresses that you can wear in the different situations or environments you are going to spend the most time in during your pregnancy. Here are some of the most common scenarios that you will need to dress for:
-
Everyday Wear
Dresses are going to become a staple part of your everyday wardrobe as you progress in your pregnancy. There are tons of different styles that come in a variety of materials that won’t feel restrictive or tight.Long maternity dresses are usually a favorite amongst ladies in their second or third trimesters. If you are loving your bump and want to show it off, we recommend a long maternity dress in a light cotton material. Try this style in a solid material for the most flattering look. Pair your long cotton maternity dress with a pair of chunky sneakers to keep yourself as comfortable as possible. Add in a matching bag and some fun jewelry for a complete and stylish look that will keep you feeling great through all stages of your pregnancy.
Alternatively, if you are not someone who wants to wear a more fitted dress during pregnancy, try out a loose-fitting tee-shirt dress. This style is much better for ladies who don’t want to show off their bump as much. And the best part is that you can pair this style with sneakers too. Because who really wants to wear heels while pregnant?
-
Business Wear
If you are going to spend the majority of your pregnancy working in an office, you are going to need someone well-fitting business attire to carry you through the later stages of your pregnancy. Depending on the level of formality at your office, some of your casual dresses can be repurposed as work attire. Instead of pairing them with casual sneakers, pair this look instead with a low-heeled bootie and a loose-fitting blazer. Or if your office has a more formal dress code, you will want to look for maternity specific styles that are similar to the type of dresses you would typically wear to your office. Many of these offer more room in the belly area so you can grow into the dress in your later trimesters. These may not be as comfortable as some of the more casual styles but they are going to be better options than wearing pants and a formal top everyday.

Formal Wear
If you have any major events to attend during your second and third trimesters, there is no need to stress about your outfit. While being several months pregnant at a formal event like a wedding can be annoying, this is actually a great opportunity to show off your growing bump and express your unique style. We recommend a loose-fitting floor-length dress in a silk material. A silk material is much lighter and more comfortable than some of the heavier materials that formal dresses typically come in. It is also ideal if your formal event is going to fall in the warmer months. If you want to conceal your figure a bit more, try something with an empire waist to cinch you in in the right places.
Look Good, Feel Good
Building a maternity wardrobe doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. You can find some great pieces that you can pair with things that already exist in your wardrobe to create a complete look. A few dresses is really all you need to develop a stylish and comfortable maternity wardrobe.
