Manchester Lung Health Check

Lung health check programme launches in Manchester.

Statistics have confirmed that Manchester has the highest rate of lung cancer deaths and the lowest uptake of screening programmes.

 

 

 

In a bid to improve survival rates for lung cancer patients, the Manchester Lung Health Check programme has been launched. The programme aims to provide quick, easily accessible screenings for those at a higher risk of lung conditions. The programme has paved the way for the diagnosing people with lung cancer despite not showing any real symptoms. Of the 46 people diagnosed, 90per cent went on to have curative treatment.

 

 

 

One of the diagnosed with lung cancer is 69-year-old Mavis George. She said: "The service was a blessing to me. I had an operation at Wythenshawe Hospital and I was free of cancer after that.

 

 

 

"The mobile unit was easy to get to – and much easier than having to go to lots of hospital appointments."

 

 

 

Dr Richard Booton, clinical director of lung cancer and thoracic surgery at Wythenshawe Hospital, said: "Lung cancer is the leading cause of premature death in Manchester and a major issue in the treatment of lung cancers is that they are often not identified until a later stage, at which point the chances of survival lower significantly."
