Manchester, which is previously known as an international centre for textile industry and manufacturing, is now leading the way in digital tech. From fashion to fintech, the city has become one of Europe’s leading hubs for cutting edge digital tech, boasting the largest number of digital workers in the UK outside of London.
Manchester is home to Pretty Little Thing, an online retailer that was recently acquired by BooHoo in 2016. It is now ranked the fastest growing fashion brand on the web and is set to further expand across the UK and the US.
The city is also home to a number of fintech businesses, including AccessPay, a specialist in cloud-based payments and cash management automation that recently secured £9million venture capital.
In January, Yorkshire Bank opened its free-to-access B Works in the city, providing a shared space for students, start-ups, SMEs and the self-employed to learn, work and bank at the same time. Barclay also put up its flagship Eagle Labs venture to provide further incubator space and support for start-ups.
The growth of digital business in the city is due to strong support that Manchester City Council and its world-renowned universities provide. Manchester Science Partnership offers campus facilities in Manchester and Cheshire with incubation, laboratory, office and meeting space available to businesses at every stage of their lifecycle — from start-up to global corporate.
