The number of council CCTVs controlled by Malvern Hills District has increased by 100per cent in the last three years, a new research has found.
This takes the number of cameras from four in 2019 to eight in 2022. Records show that the local authority slowly introduced new cameras in recent years mainly as a response to anti-social behaviour in the district. The town council recently confirmed plans to install new cameras at the Victoria Park basketball courts following reports of people loitering there.
Meanwhile, councillors from neighbouring district Upton Upon Severn have discussed the possibility of installing new cameras following an arson on the town's new playground. Based on research, the number of CCTV cameras in the district has increased by 69per cent in the last three years.
Across the United Kingdom, there is a 14per cent increase in the number of public cameras. The country now has 108,533 cameras owned by local councils.
Dominick Sandford, managing director at IronmongeryDirect, said: "CCTV is an integral part of modern-day society, and cameras have grown more commonplace in recent years as technology and connectivity have improved.
"The increases revealed in our research might raise privacy concerns, but generally CCTV benefits the safety and security of both the public and businesses, and the upwards trend is unlikely to stop anytime soon."
