Former Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney has proposed to his American girlfriend Nancy Shevell, it has been revealed.

It has been reported that the music legend asked his 51-year-old fiance to marry him after a meal at their New York apartment.

The engagement has come as a surprise to many after Paul's bitter divorce from Heather Mills in 2008.

After a drawn-out and well publicised court battle, the Beatle parted with a staggering 24.3million in a settlement.

However, heiress Nancy is said to be worlds apart from his former wife Mills.

A source told the Daily Mail:

"Paul has known for a long while that Nancy is the one. They are blissfully happy.

"She is wealthy in her own right and certainly isnt after him for his money."

The pair are expected to marry in a small ceremony at Nancy's house in The Hamptons at the end of this summer.
