The Lowestoft Town Council has organised a meeting that aims to gather information needed to decide on the future of the CCTV provision within the town. The meeting was attended by members of the public, community groups, town centre leaders, councilors and police officers.
During the meeting, the quality of the CCTV equipment, particularly after midnight when the streetlights are switched off, was discussed. The meeting heard that of the 62 cameras, the quality in percentage terms was described as 7per cent perfect, 49per cent good, 33per cent limited use and 11per cent not in use.
Sue Keeble, operations manager at Waveney Norse, said: “The system does need some investment as some of the hardware needs upgrading. More than 50pc of the cameras are in good condition and working perfectly well but there are some cameras in need of attention.”
Ian Gregory, general manager at Waveney Norse, added: “There is a golden opportunity here to review the service. It is now in your gift to decide where you want the cameras.”
The majority of attendees have agreed that the use of CCTV is essential as it very effective in preventing and detecting crime.
Ian Graham, the mayor of Lowestoft, said that the next step would be decided after further discussions at the town council meeting next month.
