Look After Your Eyes
Opticians reveal seven ways you could be risking your eyesight and what you can do about them.

Nine out of ten opticians say that they are seeing more eye problems compared to five years ago. And based on figures compiled by Optegra (a group of eye specialist), the number of cases is set to rise further. However, half of the cases of sight loss can be prevented. Here’s how:
· Maintain an ideal weight – Some studies have linked sight loss to obesity saying that individuals who are overweight have a low pigment density in the macula, the part of the eye that is crucial to enjoy sharp central vision.
· Exercise regularly – Regular exercise is not just good for your heart but also for your eyes. Sweating and breathing faster help to increase the supply of oxygen to the optic nerve and lower pressure in the eye.
· Say goodbye to poor hygiene – Poor hygience can lead to serious eye infection. Contact lens wearers are particularly at risk. If parasite found in soil, fresh water and seawater are trapped behind a contact lens, it will eat into the cornea and can destroy sight permanently.
· Use sunglasses – The World Health Organisation has confirmed that the damage caused by the sun’s UV rays is the biggest preventable risk factor for cataracts. So, make sure to wear your sunglasses when its sunny outside.
· Eat healthy diet – Diet that is rich in saturated fat can lead to a fatty build up in the blood vessels in the macula. So, say goodbye to junk and fast food and eat more fruits and vegetables everyday.
