London CCTV Bus Shelters to Receive CCTV
All new improved CCTV cameras are being trialled at bus shelters across London

In an effort to enhance safety, specially designed CCTV cameras are undergoing trials at bus shelters across London. This initiative coincides with Transport for London (TfL) deploying night-time enforcement officers.
The inaugural installation of these new CCTV cameras took place earlier this week at the Peckham Library bus stop. Four additional shelters, located at Finsbury Park, Turnpike Lane, Gants Hill, and Stratford City, are slated to receive their own cameras soon. TfL aims to expand the trial to encompass 20 shelters later this year.
These cameras, seamlessly integrated into the shelters, store recordings for 31 days to aid police investigations.
Meanwhile, night enforcement officers commenced patrols in January, effectively addressing rule-breaking behavior. In the initial four weeks, they removed 47 passengers for non-compliance with TfL regulations, including obstructive conduct or threats against staff. Additionally, 82 individuals were barred from accessing the network due to their behavior.
This development from TfL coincides with heightened scrutiny of Mayor Sadiq Khan's approach to addressing crime on public transport. Conservative mayoral candidate Susan Hall pledged to appoint a women's commissioner to combat sexual harassment on the Tube, while Liberal Democrat candidate Rob Blackie highlighted a 58% surge in reported offenses on public transport since 2016, the start of Khan's tenure.
Responding to these concerns, Mr. Khan's transport deputy, Seb Dance, emphasized the mayor's commitment to ensuring a safe transport environment. TfL already funds 2,500 dedicated police and community support officers for the transport network, along with over 500 enforcement staff operating during daylight hours.
