Vasily Klyukin, a Russian property developer who lives in Monacco, has won a trip into the space with Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio at the AMFAR gala; the biggest fundraising event at the world’s largest film festival.
The winning bidder said that he had always wanted to go into space and was determined to win the trip. He added: “I want to be a bit daring. I will have to give up smoking for sure!”
Hollywood actress Sharon Stone, who was the hostess for the evening, gave bidders a hint as to what comes with the prize. She said before the bidding started: "You don't get to go to outer space every day with a handsome movie star."
Mr Klyukin, who is set to train for three days in New Mexico before going to the space, also bought £343,000 diamond necklace.
Mr Klyukin and Leonardo DiCaprio will be joined by another two winning bidders who paid €1.8million for the trip.
The auction was able to raised €25million which is two times more compared to last year’s sum.
