When the 67 year old was unable to breathe, due to the onion being lodged in his throat, Lexi the Labrador jumped on his back, in effect performing a canine version of the Heimlich manoeuvre.
Mr Spencer said that he had felt the life leaving him and thought that he was going to die. He had been eating a lunch of crispbreads with gerkins and pickled onions.
He stated, "I couldn't get a breath in. It was scary - it had been maybe three or four minutes without a breath. I fell to the floor and I was fighting and fighting for air and to get to the door."
While he was lying on the floor, his dog had jumped onto his back with all her weight and the pressure had forced the onion out of his airway, saving his life.
Other than a sort throat and back ache, Alan has recovered well.
