Kim Jong-un has been unanimously re-elected to the country’s parliament after getting 100% of the votes in his district. His victory was announced in the highly symbolic Mount Paekdu district ahead of the results for any of the other 700 or so seats.
Elections in North Korea are conducted a little differently compared to traditional ones. Instead of giving the voters a democratic choice between candidates, they are provided the chance to approve the politicians that were pre-selected by the leading party.
Each ballot contains just a single name with the option to pick “yes” or “no.” This type of election helps the government check up on the movements and potential dissidence of the population.
Following the announcement of Kim’s 100per cent victory, the state media agency said: “This is an expression of all the service personnel and people's absolute support and profound trust in supreme leader Kim Jong-un as they single-mindedly remain loyal to him.”
