Kent LED Health Concerns

Kent County Council installs tens of thousands of LED lights despite health and wildlife concerns.

Despite research suggesting that LED lights cause health problems and disrupt wildlife, Kent County Council has pushed through with its plans and replaced all its streetlights with LED lights. The £40million scheme, which started two years ago, will be completed by the end of this year.  

 

Although the replacement programme is set to save the council more than £5million on energy cost per year, residents are concerned with the adverse effects of LED lights on health and wildlife.

 

Based on studies conducted by US researchers, LED lights are affecting wildlife “as much as the midday sun” and are three times more disruptive when compared to yellow, amber or greenish hues.

 

However, the county council has downplayed the reported risks. Kent County Council cabinet member for transport Mike Whiting said: “We are very excited to mark this significant milestone in such a crucial project for the county.

 

"As we near completion, we have been able to realise several benefits including cost savings for taxpayers, cutting-edge technology and sustainability for the environment and future generations.

 

“We are also able to quickly rectify outages to ensure that the correct amount of light is used and roads are not over lit, and eliminate the need for switch-offs.”
