The installation of super-fast internet in Kent County Council will leave 30,000 properties without access to the service.

The contact to install superfast broadband in Kent County will conclude this summer but will leave up to 30,000 properties without access to the service. Of the properties left out, more than 1,500 have a slow and unreliable internet that can take up to 30 minutes to download a TV show.

 

To address the issue, Kent County Council will launch a voucher scheme that will give affected residents up to £1,700 towards the installation of fast internet.

 

One of the affected is Cllr Rosalind Bink. She said: “Where I live, I will never get the internet I will want because at the moment it is quite selective where the installations go.

 

“We have been told that in Broadstairs, if there are unpleasant things on pavements you won’t get it.

 

“A lot of people are just missed out because of geographical and physical structures.

 

“It may well be good in some areas but there are others where it is no good at all.

 

“It has led to a lot of complaints.”

 

Cllr Andrew Bowles said: “I welcome this proposal since we [KCC] have done a good job but we need to keep pushing on this.

 

“I represent two of the biggest areas of “not spots” where they can’t get superfast broadband.

 

“It is important that we continue to focus on this because we can’t have the situation where some rural businesses are desperately disadvantaged.”
