Kate Winslet's marriage split

The Oscar winning actress has separated from her director husband Sam Mendes.

Their lawyer released a statement saying: "Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year.

"Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children. They ask that the media respect the privacy of the family."

He added that the separation was "entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement.

They met when Winslet was cast in a play by the artistic director at the Donmar Warehouse theatre in London.

The couple went public with their relationship in November 2001 and married two years later.

She had previously been married to director Jim Threapleton, the two have daughter Mia together.  

"As a family we do normal things that other family would," she told The Telegraph.

 "It's important to us that the children are just regular kids, so we go to the park, kick a ball around, go to a museum, watch a movie together or just hang out at home playing Monopoly."

The couple have a son together, Joe.
