ITV, the BBC and Channel 4 Team Up

ITV, the BBC and Channel 4 could soon launch a joint British TV streaming service to compete with Netflix.

The broadcaster’s chief executive Carolyn McCall has confirmed that they are investing £60million over the next three years to create a streaming service of their own. She added that reports suggesting ITV was in talks with the BBC and Channel 4 about collaborating on a “British Netflix” are true.

 

McCall said: “People in this country like British content,”

 

“No-one does authentically British shows like Broadchurch, Midsomer Murders, Doctor Who, Sherlock and David Attenborough’s landmark natural history series like we do and people all over the world love them. Moving those programmes from existing streaming services into an exclusive new one could be a huge opportunity for British broadcasters.”

 

“Britflix” could be launched only if UK’s public service broadcasters (PSB) work together. No one in the county is powerful enough on its own and the scale of Netflix and Amazon is so huge that PSBs have to put aside their difference and work in unison. This is especially true now that the number of UK subscriptions to television streaming services NOW TV, Netflix and Amazon has overtaken traditional pay television for the first time.
