The Isle of Wight, which is a pioneer in the maritime and marine vessel production sector, is poised to become a regional tech innovation hub. The island’s local council has recently launched its Digital Island Strategy that aims to transform England’s largest island into a digital innovation hub.
The ambitious plans include identifying and endorsing opportunities to harness digital tech in order to boost growth on the island. It focuses on providing economic growth while aiding in environmental protection and reducing the carbon footprint of local entrepreneurship. A key part of the digital agenda is ensuring that the needed skills by local enterprises and individuals in the area are met.
The recently concluded 2019 Isle of Wight Chamber Business Awards has revealed the diversity and potential business initiatives on the island. Gurit, a firm that specialises in composite materials and engineering solutions, was chosen for the Technology and Innovation Award while the Garlic Farm, which celebrates the island’s agricultural heritage, took home the Retailer, Tourism, Business and Marketing & PR Award.
