ISIS supporters appear to have successfully hacked a US military Twitter account. The group gate-crashed the account of Central Command, also known as CentCom, and posted internal information of senior officers.
The group, who called themselves Cyber Caliphate, took over the account at about 12:30pm eastern time on Monday and posted messages including threats to US military personnel.
Among the most disturbing tweets read: “AMERICAN SOLDIERS, WE ARE COMING, WATCH YOUR BACK. ISIS”.
“You'll see no mercy infidels. ISIS is already here, we are in your PCs, in each military base. With Allah's permission we are in CENTCOM now,” the document reads. “We won't stop! We know everything about you, your wives and children. U.S. soldiers! We're watching you!”
Aside from personal information of senior military officers, the group also posts images of documents containing what appeared to be sensitive Pentagon information as well as links to other sites where more information was available for download.
However, A US Defence Department official told Reuters that no classified information has been published.
A Pentagon official, on the other hand, told NBC News that although the breach was definitely an embarrassment to the US government, it was “not a security threat.”
The accounts have now been recovered by the US military.
