Home automation has gone far beyond controlling heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. With the advent of numerous gadgets, devices and groundbreaking technologies, a range of smart home automation solutions is now available to home owners who desire a revolutionary way of interacting with various domestic systems and appliances.
Home automation offers many benefits including convenience and cost-savings. Security is also important and is considered one of the biggest motivating factors in purchasing smart devices. This is evidenced by the growing sales of connected cameras and remotely controlled windows and door locks, among others.
It has been forecasted that by 2020, there will be billions of monitors, sensors, controllers, computers, switches and other consumer gadgets that will collect and analyse information to bring users convenience, cost-savings, and improved safety and security.
However, there are barriers that major players in the industry must provide solution for in order for home automation to achieve mass market adoption. These include lack of interoperability of different devices, networks, protocols, and applications that may undermine user confidence. Homeowners may also find some systems difficult to use, which can be exacerbated by general lack of familiarity with home automation in general.
