Internet Of School Things
How exactly IoT impacts our education system?
14:08 31 May 2017
Internet of Things is expected by many to completely alter the way students in school learn with many visualising that learners will soon be connected to RFID and iPads scanning objects while personalised curricula is delivered to their desks.
However, this may be far from reality as connectivity in school is about far more than making lives “easier.” More than helping educators save time in finding resources, the technology brings about real changes by fostering a better and faster learning climate.
Employees at Bosch have turned to IoT to improve the school “atmosphere” using climate control and energy saving sensors. The system, which they call Einstein, notifies them when there are temperature or air changes allowing them to make necessary adjustments to achieve more favourable conditions that are more ideal for better focus.
Meanwhile, an English teacher uses IoT to let her students gain experience by doing more rather than just listening. Robyn L. Howton begins her class with brief introductions before giving her students tasks. Using iPads, they work in groups to prepare and create presentations to be shared with the class.
Experts believe that IoT will be successfully integrated into the education system and will help educators save money or harness data. However, for that to happen, our understanding of education must shift. It is also crucial that companies create practical, reasonable products that teachers, students and administrators can get behind.
