Intel's 5G Platform

Intel has announced its platform will be the first to support upcoming 5G standards.

Intel has announced its 5G Mobile Trial Platform will support the 5G non-standalone new radio standard that uses LTE as a base for coverage and management as well as 5G NR carriers to boost data rates and lower latency. 

 

Intel’s platform, which is hoped to enable 3GPP-based trials and deployments of 5G ahead of its official standardisation in 2020, has been used in trials by Nokia, Ericsson, AT&T, Korea Telecom, NTT DOCOMO and Verizon.

 

The platform was first unveiled at Mobile World Congress in 2016 and features Intel programmable circuits and processors.

 

Another 5G-realated tests were conducted by Samsung and KDDI this week using 5G mmWave technology. The companies were able to set a world record by communicating at speeds of over 190km on the Everland SPEEDWAY in Korea.

 

Meanwhile, in Japan, Softbank and Huawei demonstrated a range of use-cases for 5G that involves remotely controlling a robotic arm and real-time ultra-HD video transmission.
