How industrial internet of things can improve processes and our quality of lives.

Industrial internet of things (IoT) involves connecting many devices to the internet so they can communicate with each other to improve certain processes. This can help identify potential problems before they even occur empowering people in charge to take action to prevent unnecessary disruptions.

 

One good example is German manufacturer ThyssenKrupp, a company that runs more than one million elevators around the world. It uses intelligent IoT algorithms to predict when a lift is about to breakdown and then prevent it from doing so.

 

Andreas Schierenbeck, chief executive at ThyssenKrupp Elevator, said: “Businesses need to find a way to keep up with the rapid pace of change that 21st-century life brings,”

 

“IoT systems that are integrated into industry in an intelligent and practical way can provide the solution to this challenge.”

 

In order to connect and carry out analytics for more than a million elevators, ThyssenKrupp uses cloud as well as edge computing and fog computing to achieve the needed enormous amount of computational power.

 

Choosing the right one can define the success or failure of any IoT project.

 

However, there is no one size fits all. “The best solution may involve a combination of all three approaches,” says Graeme Wright, IoT director at Fujitsu UK and Ireland.
