Hull City Council to Install 5G Masts

Hull City Council to install more mobile masts across the city to keep up with the demand for digital networks.

Hull City Council is taking steps to make sure that it can keep up with the increasing demand for digital connectivity, including the arrival of 5G. As part of the plan, more mobile masts will be installed across the city and the council will appoint a specialist firm to help secure more deals with mobile telecoms companies.

 

In Hull, internet access via mobile devices is higher when compared to fixed-line broadband. The city council provides the service by attaching masts to council-owned high-rise tower blocks.

 

City council property manager Nick Howbridge said: "Although Hull now has good coverage for 3G and 4G from the main providers, there is interest from the market in expanding their infrastructure to provide greater bandwidth.

 

"That is to say, you can get a signal pretty much anywhere in Hull now but as more people go online and do more high data-consuming activities like video streaming, more equipment like rooftop masts will be needed to support the density of traffic."

 

Council finance director David Bell said: "There is clearly a significant commercial opportunity to potentially exploit in future, especially if the growth in technology continues as forecast."
