How to Write an Effective Thesis Statement for Your Essay
An effective thesis statement is the most important sentence of an essay or any paper for that matter.

The thesis statement reveals the topic of the paper. It gives a sense of direction and lets the reader know what to expect. It's also the anchor that can help you, the writer, stay on track when your thoughts start to wonder and your words start to ramble. You can buy essay as well as only a thesis statement for it. But in any case, you should think of it like the boss that tells you what you're going to write about in the rest of the paper.
It appears in the introductory paragraph, usually as the last sentence, like a signpost pointing both the writer and the reader in the right direction.
How to Write a Simple Thesis Statement
Get to the Point!
The simple thesis statement is probably the easiest one to write, especially for beginning writers. It uses a short declarative sentence to state the subject of the paper.
Examples:
- Dogs make good pets.
A reader can assume that this paper will explain the reasons why a dog is a good pet.
- Thomas Edison invented many things.
What do you suppose this paper will cover? I'm guessing it will talk about some of Thomas Edison's most notable inventions.
- An eagle is a magnificent bird.
The reader can expect to read about the traits that make the eagle extra special.
How to Write an Outline Thesis Statement
Map it Out
The outline thesis statement actually accomplishes two goals. It reveals the topic of the paper and serves as a map letting the reader know in what order subtopics will be covered. This is an excellent choice for writers who tend to wander off-topic or lose their way in the middle of the paper.
Examples:
- Dogs make good pets because they are loyal, loving, and fun.
The writer tells why he thinks dogs make good pets. The reader can assume that he will devote the first part of the paper to showing how they are loyal, the second part to their loving nature, and the third part to what makes them fun.
- The best way to lose weight is through a healthy diet, regular exercise, and an active lifestyle.
This writer is going to talk about how to lose weight. The body of the paper will flow in this order:
- healthy diet
- regular exercise
- active lifestyle
- I've narrowed my college choices to Yale, Harvard, and Princeton.
What do you think this paper is about? What is the order in which the subtopics will be presented?
How to Write a Mature Thesis Statement
How the Professionals Do It
The simple thesis statement and the outline thesis statement are great for beginning writers, but if you plan to go to college or write in a professional capacity, you'll need to eventually master the mature thesis statement or buy essay online as an option. This is the one that shows that you really know how to write and get your point across in an interesting way.
Examples:
- If you're looking for a pet that will greatly enrich your life, a dog is a smart choice.
This thesis statement still gets the point across that dogs are good pets. The author will still explain why this is true. But the sentence has style, an easy flow, and interesting word choices.
- Changes in the healthcare industry have opened the door for some exciting new types of medical careers that have never existed before.
This writer piques curiosity by letting us know that we will learn something new, cutting edge, by reading this paper, but the thesis statement also offers some background information about the topic.
- A lot of authors know how to craft a good story, but few can master the art of totally engaging the reader as Jane Austen does.
What do you think about this thesis statement? What makes it sound polished and professional?
