For ambitious students, creating an essay, in other words, a motivation letter for university admission, is a chance to demonstrate academic ability, originality of thinking, and impression with written English skills.
The question often arises of how to write a memorable essay and stand out among the crowd. In this article, we will reveal this secret to you and give you an essay help.
Why are we writing essays?
Before writing it, we need to get back to the basics, understand who will check and analyze, after that it will become clear what the teachers are looking for.
Not only the level of the student is taken into account, but also many other aspects:
Knowledge is fundamentally important, writing an essay makes it possible to check and consolidate information, which is important in the learning process, especially in the humanities.
Understanding is a test of understanding and explaining complex concepts and situations. Teachers pay attention to your ability to cover a given topic.
It is also a test of the ability to perceive and process a large amount of information in such a short period, the ability to highlight important information.
Written English test.
As part of the entire admission procedure, a limited time frame is also allocated for writing work, here your ability to plan and distribute work is tested. Of course, all tasks must be done at the highest level and delivered on time.
We already know why we are writing essays, but this is not enough. Teachers may have their preferences in choosing the best, but still, some features distinguish the best from the best:
- Originality of thought
The hallmark of a good essay is originality. This does not mean that in your work you have to present the novelty of the research you will have enough time to study each subject deeply separately on the GCSE, A-level, or even on the IB program.
- Deep knowledge
Your essay should demonstrate not only deep knowledge, but also a clear understanding of the topic of the current problem, and reveal the topic, supported by a large number of arguments and theses. To confirm the high quality of your work, you need to process a large amount of information and compare other people's ideas about the topic.
- Concretizing information
The purpose of the content of a flawless essay is to inform and persuade. The use of specific knowledge related to the topic does not take up a lot of teachers' time. This brings us back to the question of sorting relevant facts and separating the necessary and important information from the general one. Superfluous information only shows that you do not quite understand the essence.
- Flawless English
The structure of the presentation should be perceived with ease. Sentences should be logical and understandable the first time. The main thing is to adhere to a logical connection between sentences and the transition from one fact to another. And, of course, spelling and grammar must be impeccable.
- Additional knowledge
Assertive students always read more than the recommended reading list.
Undoubtedly, reading books over time will allow you to improve your knowledge, be the best among your peers and make a deep impression with your outstanding essays. When learning English, for example, you do not need to read-only specific texts.
We offer you some tips to help you expand your knowledge by reading additional literature:
- Read and compare different works of the author;
- Work with contemporary literature. Analyze the text of the essay, whether you support modern thoughts;
- Do a psychological analysis of the author's work, study the work of his predecessors, which inspired the author to write the work;
- Readings of literary criticism;
- Analyze the thoughts of critics and determine whose opinions are closest to you;
- Background. Here you can refer to the context of the work (we will return to this later).
At first glance, our advice might seem like a lot of extra work. It is good to test other methods, for example, taking notes, writing important information out of context.
Before you start writing an essay, formulate a goal.
You are probably tired of hearing this kind of advice. But it is very important to start writing work with specific ideas. This requires an outline of the essay. It will not take much time, you just need to open a new Word document and write down the ideas that you want to discuss in order.
Balanced arguments
A good essay combines the two sides of presenting arguments, on the one hand, the presentation of information, and on the other, considers different points of view. One-sided arguments will not impress the admissions committee.
Your opinion also counts
Substantiate your opinions. This will show that you are not hiding behind the thoughts of other people, but that you have your reasonable independent point of view.
References to citations
Base your opinion using quotes from famous works. This demonstrates a good command of information. However, do not go too far, an extremely large number of quotes in an essay will not be a plus for you. Frequent referral to quotes is your lack of confidence in the explanation of the topic. As already mentioned, it is very important to present your arguments based on the reasons.
Scientific citations and bibliography
Show your competence by using citations and references. This will not only show your organization and erudition, but also the number of works that were studied during the creation of your motivation letter.
For quotes, footnotes, you can use the "footnote" "insert" function in the text editor. There are various accepted forms for citation, but remember, you need to stick to the same format throughout your work. Usually, in the footnotes, the title and author of the work, the date of publication, and the page number are written.
For example Curta, F. (2007) - “Some remarks on ethnicity in medieval archeology” in Early Medieval Europe 15 (2), pp. 159-185
Bug fixes
How many times have you typed the word form instead of from? This, by the way, is one of the huge errors that are missed when checking. English must be flawless: a clear and understandable structure of the sentence, all the apostrophes in place, no typos and grammatical errors.
Number and write your name at the top of each page of your essay. Also, make sure to use one Times New Roman or Arial font. For example, reading a fancy Gothic font is hard. Even if you write about the gothic direction in literature,
the person reading your work will not be completely interesting and difficult.
To get in time
There is no need to remind you of deadlines for the delivery of work, but in any case, this is important, for a complete understanding, we explain why: even if you wrote the best essay in 100 years, but submitted it for review later than the established terms, the chances of good reviews, as well as its consideration, are reduced ... Do not leave everything for the last days, ideally, you should start writing the essay well in advance and leave time to check and analyze the work.
