VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) has been gaining major traction for telecommunications and business applications. One of the most widely used VoIP protocol is Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). The majority of hosted VoIP service and on-premise deployment are either based or supported by SIP.

 

If you’re an Android user, here’s how you can make SIP calls on your smartphone.

 

SIP support has been available for Android users since 2002 when version 2.3, also known as Gingerbread, has been introduced. This means that any modern smartphone that runs the Android operating system will be able to make SIP calls and will let for integration with VoIPstudio. Google refers to the service as Wi-Fi calling.

 

To set up SIP on Android, all you need is a VoIP service provider and, of course, your Android phone. Details that you’re going to need in order to start making calls include your username, password and server/domain address.

 

Start by obtaining your SIP credentials from the VoIP service that you are using. In the case of VoIPStudio, you can find your username, password and SIP domain by selecting the profile from the My Account panel. Proceed to the settings and choose call settings. Open up the SIP client on your phone and navigate to call options under the settings menu and then click on phone account settings. Next, check the option for incoming calls to receive SIP calls as well.

 

And that’s it! You can now make and receive SIP calls as long as the other party also uses a VoIP service that supports SIP.
