As with many other industries, technological advancements and innovation are helping to drive the world of sport to new heights. This article will look at some of the ways that technology has become prevalent in sports and its many benefits.
Video Assistance
One of the most talked about technological advancements in the world of sport in recent years is the introduction of VAR.
VAR, or video assistance referees has caused a stir in the world of football in the last few years and continues to be a hotly discussed topic on a daily or weekly basis. In the past, referees would make their call on on-field decisions based solely on their first impression of an incident, or with the help of their fellow on-field assistants.
However, the introduction of VAR means that referees can access instant replays of incidents on the pitch, allowing them to make better-informed decisions about the intent behind an action, say a tackle for example, and act accordingly.
Although the use of instant replays should help to eradicate incorrect decisions being made on the pitch, this isn’t always the case, and many football fans and pundits alike are still unhappy with how VAR has been deployed in the world of football.
Sports Equipment
Technological innovation means that sports equipment is better than ever before. Whether that’s the latest tech helping to design running trainers that are more ergonomic or jerseys of the top teams in the Premier League that are created to be lightweight and sweat-resistant, technology means that athletes across the board have the tools to perform at the highest level.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
Making sure that athletes can stay fit is hugely important, and technological advancements in the world of sports are making it easier to help professional sports players stay fit for longer and recover quicker from injuries or fatigue.
Athletes can now adorn wearable sensor technology which can help to avoid injury and improve performance. Small, compact devices can be integrated into clothing or worn on the body and can help to monitor things such as heart rate, hydration and biochemical movements. This data can help physios and coaches identify any potential risks and help players stay safe and avoid injuries.
Virtual Reality Technology
VR is finding a place within many different industries and sectors, and the world of sports is no different. In terms of rehabilitation, many athletes are being offered the opportunity to better engage with their rehab by donning VR headsets to make the sessions more immersive and interactive. As a result, injury rehabilitation could improve and players could return to the field more quickly if they engage better with their recovery programmes.
