Sir Anthony Hopkins is to reprise his role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter for a new film in the hit franchise.

Universal confirmed the news and revealed that director Ridley Scott is also on board for the new project.

A Universal spokeswoman said: "As far as we know, this project is alive Anthony Hopkins and Ridley Scott are both very committed.

"We like what we've got, and the revised script is really, really good."

Actress Jodie Foster will not be reprising her role as the FBI agent Clarice Starling as seen in 'The Silence of the Lambs', however Cate Blanchett has been tipped to take on the part.

Hopkins won a Best Actor Oscar for playing the psychotic cannibal, Hannibal, in 'The Silence of the Lambs'.

He also played him in the follow-up 'Hannibal' and prequel 'Red Dragon'.
