Hi-tech solar-powered bins that can hold up to 10 times more rubbish than a normal bin have been installed across North East Lincolnshire.
Four of the £4,400 compacting litterbins can now be found at locations where street bins fill up quickly, including Weelsby Woods, People’s Park, Cleethorpes Country Park and Duke of York Gardens.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment, said: “Most people hate to see litter in the streets, parks and on the beach, there’s no excuse for it. If you can’t find a bin, then please be responsible and take your rubbish home.
"Software installed in the new solar bins collects data and generates wireless alerts when they are full and need to be emptied."
“This saves on time, reduces traffic and related emissions and ultimately cuts the cost of collection.”
The annual cost of the bins maintenance is £10,000 but upgrading them helps reduce the costs and make them easier to maintain.
