A local council now requires new housing developments in Hinckley and Bosworth to include the fastest broadband access to residents.
The ruling follows Councillor Richard Allen's proposal which stated: “In recent years, and particularly during the coronavirus pandemic, it has become increasingly clear that access to high speed superfast and ultrafast broadband internet is a necessity, not a luxury.
“However, the builders of new residential developments are given the choice as to what telecommunications infrastructure is put in place, including the increasingly outdated and insufficient ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) copper cable structure.”
A recent study has shown that internet use has increased by 78per cent following the Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020. It added that traffic to both Amazon Prime Video more than doubled compared to only a 28per cent rise in the year prior.
