A fresh stage in the Hillsborough inquests will begin today following a three-week adjournment after lawyers asked for more time to consider pathology evidence. On Friday, members of the jury are scheduled to visit the stadium to examine its layout.
Detective Superintendent Neil Malkin is expected to begin with a presentation that will cover a number of topics including inquiries in an address, which is expected to last two days. He’s working for Operation Resolve – a separate police investigation in to the disaster that killed 96 people.
Lawyer Michael Mansfield QC, who is acting for many of the bereaved families, said: "They wish to express both to you and your counsel and to everyone in this court their appreciation… for the care, for the patience, for the understanding that has been extended to each of them.
"This has enabled them to unlock painful memories, as you described them last week, upsetting but also uplifting. It has provided… a permanent testament to the dignity of the human spirit."
