Hillsborough 96 Freedom of Liverpool
Hillsborough 96 posthumously awarded Freedom of Liverpool.
17:11 24 September 2016
The 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster along with former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish were honoured with the Freedom of Liverpool during a ceremony at St George’s Hall.
Others that were also honoured include Prof Phil Scraton, the former Bishop of Liverpool, and Dalglish’s wife Marina.
Scrolls bearing the name of each victim and medals to denote the city’s highest honours were given to their families.
In April, an inquest jury found that the victims were unlawfully killed at the 1989 FA Cup game in Sheffield.
Mr Dalglish, who was manager at the time of the tragedy, represented the club at the fans’ funerals and help support the bereaved families.
He said: "We only did for the families what they did for us - support us."
The victims' families were awarded freedom of the city of Liverpool in 2009.
