Hertfordshire County Council has recently launched falls prevention packs to help residents remain safe and independent at home.
The council's ‘Move it or Lose it – Falls Prevention Packs’ were launched following research showing that gentle exercises can help improve balance and coordination. Residents will have free access to CDs and DVDs showing a range of seated and standing exercises along with a ‘Get Up and Go’ leaflet from the Royal Society of Physiotherapy and ROSPA’s ‘Checklist for preventing falls at home’.
Residents can access the checklist to help them identify potential fall hazards in and around their homes from local libraries. The council's website also provides resources containing information on how to prevent falls and what residents should do if they do have a fall.
Social care professionals are also provided with a checklist that they can go through with residents as they discuss the risk of falls and who to contact for further support should they need more information about the issue.
In addition, the council provides information on various assistive technology, such as alarms and housing adaptations, that can make the homes safer for residents.
