350 travellers were evacuated from the GWR Intercity Express service when the ‘high tech’ train broke down near Exeter, leaving passengers stranded for five hours. The train, which believed to have suffered a brakes failure, also caused havoc on the lines, delaying other service in the process. The stranded passengers were forced to depart the carriage by ladder and then forced to walk down the track in pitch black as they left the abandoned train at around 10.30pm.
Passenger Stuart Smith, who missed a flight from London Gatwick to Austria, said: “After spending five hours on GWR's new broken down rolling stock we finally got evacuated.
"Everyone is quiet. Tired and hungry. After six hours, we've only been offered a packet of peanuts and a bottle of water."
One passenger wrote: “Help. Stop. Please send blankets and aid. Stop.
“Been stuck on 14:10 from St Erth. We’ve been stuck on broken down train for four hours now outside #TivertonParkway sort it out @GWRHelp @bbcpointswest tired, hungry and busting for a wee!”
Another man tweeted: “When your girlfriend is on a new train and it breaks down.
"Apparently the powers now gone out but at least they evacuated the train. She was supposed to be in Reading 1.5 hours ago, not in Devon in the dark. #TivertonParkway.”
