US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has been vocal about his plans to deport illegal immigrants if elected. While in Arizona, he told a cheering crowd that he would secure the border with a wall that Mexico will pay for “100%”.
Hours earlier, he met Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto who later insisted that Mexico would not pay.
Trump has been sending mix signals about his plans to deport an estimated 11million undocumented immigrants living in the US. In his speech in Phoenix, he said that their fate was not a “core issue” and that deporting “criminal aliens” would be the priority.
However, he later said: "Anyone who has entered the United States illegally is subject to deportation. That is what it means to have laws."
In a fiery speech, he said that he would create a “special deportation force” to remove immigrants arrested for crimes and introduce “extreme vetting” of immigrants to make sure that they adhered to American values.
Mr Trump said it was the right of the US to choose immigrants that "we think are the likeliest to thrive and flourish and love us".
"Applicants will be asked for their views about honour killings, about respect for women and gays and minorities, attitudes on radical Islam," he said.
