Well, the gateway to being highly effective students and being the top academic performers in your class is learning how to work smarter. Students have different learning and studying style and there is no one-size-fits-all approach, however, there are study habits which can help students in all aspects. Most students are always playing it safe in studying. Reading only before the exams and waking up early in the morning to do homework are just two of the bad habits students are guilty of having.
There are helpful tips out there which you can try if you want to get good grades, higher score on exams and have your professors notice your hard work! Well, below, find the habits that smart students should consider.
- Create a timetable for studying
Most effective and smart students have their own timetables. They have specific schedule throughout the week when and where they are going to study. This is an essential way for students to have a deep sense of discipline. Especially in today's world, where there are many obstructions for the students to be organized and effective for their studies. Creating a routine which would help the students to get better and better is a nice habit which they can develop for a successful academic life.
- Have regular breaks
If there is one tip you have to remember in creating great study habits, it is to never let yourself submerge with studies for hours straight. Having frequent breaks is necessary. Most of the time, when you are studying for 2 hours straight and having no breaks, you will feel completely drained and exhausted. When you are tired, the tendency to retain the information you have stored in your memory is very low. But if you have breaks in between 30 minutes, you are helping the information to store stronger in your brain. You can even write it to your schedule – I will do my assignment online for half an hour and then I’ll have a 10 minute break. Try it out!
- Study in groups
There are students who prefer studying alone; however, if you haven't tried to study in a group, this is the chance for you to try it out. When you are studying alone, you are actually relying on your own knowledge and not all the information are kept in your memory bank. But if you are working with your classmates, you have different resources, you have shared knowledge. Most of the time, there are exercises you can do when in groups. For example, someone will ask the question and the rest will try to guess what the answer is. In this way, the information will retain well because you have read it and at the same time, you heard it.
- Start with the Most Difficult Subject first
In creating your timetable, it is recommended to put the hardest subject you have like calculus, algebra and financial management on the top priority list. These subjects require the most effort and mental energy. Just imagine, if you put this to the end of your list, you will have no energy to deal with it. So, if you place these subjects on your priority top, it would be easier to complete the rest of your work.
- Never Procrastinate
You have created your timetable. You have frequent breaks. You also included a study group to your plan and even start to study the most difficult subject first. Now, your presence is utmost needed and highly reliable for this part, because it is the application time. Procrastination is the greatest foe of students nowadays. If you procrastinate with your plan, everything will fall apart; everything you planned will be worthless. Well, be disciplined enough for your goals and for your academic performance. A smart and effective student will never let the opportunity to be the best version of themselves pass.
As a student, there are a bulk of projects and assignments on your table, but most of the time you are running out of time to do all of them, that’s why there are online services that can help you with those things. Remember, working smart is way better than working hard.
