The Grand National is the biggest steeplechase race in the world and boasts three days’ worth of activities which include a variety of races, live musical entertainment, and other special performances that are appropriate for the whole family.
Here are the winners of the Grand National for the past five years:
- 2012—Neptune Collonges
- 2011—Ballabriggs
- 2010—Don’t Push It
- 2009—Mon Mome
- 2008—Compy or Die
This year’s contenders for the Grand National include a few horses which will be returning to the track and did well on the course in 2012. They have an added advantaged due to the familiarity with the course.
- Imperial Commander
- What a Friend
- Weird Al
- Quel Esprit
- Big Fella Thanks
- Roberto Goldback
- Seabass
- Ballabriggs
- Sunnyhillboy
- The Rainbow Hunter
- Bob Lingo
With the Grand National, there isn’t another course like it which makes anticipating winning horses a true challenge. The results don’t necessarily depend on how well horses are running their previous races. There are a few general considerations to look for when trying to guess the outcome of the race.
- Check the horse’s records to see if they have performed well on courses with difficult jumps
- Find out how well the horse has done on a track of similar length (the Grand National course is over four miles)
- Older horses may struggle with the course, but this will also depend on health and experience
- Horses that carry too much weight may not be able to properly complete the rigorous course
- Familiarity with the course lends a distinct advantage in most cases
Due to the performance last year of Seabass and Sunnyhillboy, many people believe that it will be one of those horses who will win this year’s 2013 Grand National title, but horses like Bob Lingo have been performing well in previous races this year.
