Google is quietly working on a second version of its Glass headset aimed at business users. According to new documents filed with the US Federal Communication Commissions (FCC), the new headset will feature a foldable design allowing owners to store Glass like normal spectacles in their pockets. It will also have a larger screen. Rumours suggest that it will be waterproof and hard-wearing. It will also have better WiFi, faster processors, and improved camera and battery life.
Google’s latest move surprised many as the first version of its Glass headset was a commercial flop. In January 2015, the company had to discontinue its sales after it struggled to win over consumers. At the time, Google remained optimistic and vowed to release a new version of the wearable device “when it’s ready.”
Google Glass, which was criticised due to its nerdy image, was also beset with controversy, due to the ability of the wearer to take photos and record videos surreptitiously. It was banned in some bars in San Francisco following a series of attacks on users. The device was also banned in cars, cinemas, casino, hospitals, and banks.
