Golden Globes 2019
The 76th annual Golden Globe Awards were hosted in honour of the best films and television of 2018.
18:30 08 April 2019
The ceremony was held at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
This year’s event was presented by actors Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh. There was a twist at the end of the ceremony, with Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book staging upset wins. Green Book won three awards which were the most for the evening. It was followed by Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma.
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were considered by many as the favourites to win. They went home with Best Original Song award for Shallow. Adam McKay’s Vice led with six nominations. It was followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ period dark comedy; The Favourite, A Star is Born and Green Book, with five nods each. Black Panther is the first superhero film to be selected for best picture.
Rami Malek won the Best Actor award for Bohemian Rhapsody. On the other hand, Bale won the Best Actor award for Vice.
The television category was led by Ryan Murphy’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace with four nominations. The Handmaid’s Tale was last year’s winner of the top TV prize. What’s shocking? It was largely snubbed at the Golden Globes 2019. Mrs Maisel took home the comedy Globe and Versace won the TV drama award.
Here are some honourable mentions from the Golden Globes Awards!
Best Actress in a Television Musical, Best Television Comedy
Rachel Brosnahan stole the show with her outstanding outfit. She wore a yellow gown and was absolutely slaying on the red carpet. The beautiful star picks up her second Golden Globe award in The Marvellous Mrs Maisel. She shared the stage with Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh and congratulated Amy Sherman-Palladino.
“Thank you to our incredible village that it really takes to make this show, and our village is a matriarchy led by Amy Sherman-Palladino,” Rachel Brosnahan said.
The Globe for best comedy series was won by Netflix’s The Kominsky Method. Michael Douglas has already won a Globe for his exhilarating performance.
Best Director
Alfonso Cuaron won the best director of the Golden Globe award for his semi-autobiographical drama, Roma. The movie is based on Cuaron’s childhood memories and is set in 1970s Mexico City. It is his second Golden Globe. The latter won his first in 2013 space adventure, Gravity.
“Another part of me is telling me, in reality – this film was directed by Libo (the person on whom it is based). My mother, and my family. This film would not have been possible without the specific colours that made me who I am. Gracias familia, gracias Mexico,” he said in his acceptance speech.
