Glasgow has been named Scotland’s top city and fifth in the UK for public WiFi access by mobile phone insurance provider, Insurance2Go.
The city provides 475 WiFi hotspots in public places, including community centres and libraries. Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, on the other hand, ranked second with 471 public WiFi hotspots and is number six on the UK top ten list.
The best city in the UK for the public to access WiFi is London, which offers the service to a whopping 9,269 locations. Birmingham is in second place with 620 locations while Leeds and Manchester ranked third and fourth, respectively.
The results of the UK survey have raised some serious questions about other cities in Scotland that do not have the same digital infrastructure as Glasgow and Edinburgh. The Scottish government said that they are committed to improving public WiFi access and intends to “deliver free WiFi throughout major town and city centres across Scotland.”
In Dundee, £350million is invested in the redevelopment of the city with public WiFi and 5G readiness a heavy focus.
Dundee Council Leader John Alexander said: “We are also thinking innovatively about strengthening the city’s infrastructure for years to come, and this will include the delivery of WiFi and 5G readiness in the Central Waterfront with the Scottish Futures Trust.
