Geoffrey Hughes, known for his role as Eddie Yates in Coronation Street, has died of cancer after battling it for two years. He was 68.
According to his family, the star died ‘peacefully in his sleep’ last Friday night. His two-year fight with prostate cancer has been described as ‘long’ and ‘courageous’ even as it ultimately claimed the life of the actor.
Although born in Merseyside, Geoffrey died in his home on the Isle of Wight. The actor’s passing puts an end to an admirable legacy that started when he played Eddie in Corrie for nine years.
He also played Onslow in Keeping Up Appearances, as well as wheeler dealer Vernon Scripps in the show Heartbeat and Twiggy in The Royle Family. Before he began his battle with cancer, Hughes was introduced to the younger generation as Uncle Keith, the role he played in the teen drama Skins.
A spokesperson from Corrie has released a statement about the passing of one of its dearly loved actors: “We are very sad to hear of the death of Geoffrey Hughes. He created a legendary and iconic character in Eddie Yates who will always be part of Coronation Street. Everyone connected with the programme sends our sincerest condolences to his family and friends.”
