1- Rounders
Poker fans will not find a better movie than the 1998 American drama film called Rounders, which stars Matt Damon, Edward Norton, John Malkovich, and Gretchen Mol in the main role. This film tells the story of a young man Mike McDermott (Damon) who is a gifted player and dreams of winning the World Series of Poker. However, he is terrible at bankroll management and suffers a serious setback during a game against Teddy KGB.
The protagonist subsequently promises to leave poker for good, but he finds it hard to keep his promise after his friend gets into a difficult financial situation.
Rounders is highly entertaining and deals with topics beyond the game of poker, with friendship and loyalty also important themes of the John Dahl directed movie. It was moderately successful at the box office and also received good reviews from the critics.
2- The Cincinnati Kid
The Cincinnati Kid is one of the oldest poker movies (first released in 1965), but still, it has earned a special place in the hearts of all poker lovers. Based on Richard Jessup’s book of the same name, it recounts the story of a gambler who wants to become the best poker player around. And that’s how he comes up against Lancey Howard, the man who has a big reputation for poker.
3- California Split
California Split tells the story of two friends named Bill (George Segal) and Charlie (Elliott Gould) who meet in a poker game and embark on the journey of becoming professional gamblers. And that’s how they encounter several difficult situations, which forces them to think about their life choices. The two main characters realize that a gambling lifestyle isn’t all fun and involves problems & sacrifices that one doesn’t anticipate in the beginning.
The American comedy-drama film first hit the screens in August 1974 and received good reviews from critics who were impressed with the direction of Robert Altman and performances of the actors.
According to New York’s Vulture.com, California Split is the greatest movie about gambling ever made.
4- Maverick
If you are looking for a hugely entertaining and funny movie, then Maverick could be a good fit for you. It is about a card player named Bret Maverick (Mel Gibson) who wants to enter a high-stakes poker tournament but is three thousand dollars short of the entry fee. He tries to make that amount by engaging in gambling and teams up with the young con artist Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster). And that’s how the two get into several funny and dangerous situations, with the film keeping its light tone throughout.
The Richard Donner directed movie grossed over $183 million worldwide and became a commercial success. It also received very favourable reviews from the critics and was also nominated for an Academy Award.
5- High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story
If football fans know Sergio Aguero as one of the best strikers in EPL, then poker enthusiasts take the name of Stu Ungar as one of the greatest players of the sport. The Kid has the distinction of winning the World Series of Poker Main Event for an incredible three times.
High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story is a biopic on the life of the poker genius who died with no assets to his name at the age of 45. Starring Michael Imperioli, the A.W. Vidmer directed movie details the life events of Stuey, from his early days of playing gin rummy to becoming one of the greatest Texas Hold’em players. High Roller is told in flashback and keeps audiences hooked to the screen throughout.
