According to daily newspaper Le Parisien, French first lady Valerie Trierweiler was admitted to the hospital days after a celebrity magazine reports an alleged affair between her partner French president Francois Hollande and 41-year-old actress Julie Gayet.
The newspaper said that the first lady, who is scheduled to be discharged early in the week, was shaken by the ordeal.
Her spokesperson Patrice Biancone said: “She has been in hospital since Friday. She will leave tomorrow [Monday].” When asked about Trierweiler's next move, Biancone said: “She needs rest. Then, she will decide what to do.”
Meanwhile, a source at the Elysee declined to comment on either the magazine report or Trierweiler's hospitalisation. A source said: “The president is at work. He is preparing Tuesday's news conference.”
President Hollande threatened to sue celebrity magazine Closer after it published reports of his alleged affair with Gayet.
Hollande, who is now complaining of breach of privacy, was allegedly photographed entering Gayet’s Paris flat followed a by man masked by a black motorcycle helmet, who it is believed was his bodyguard.
