David Suchet had made his final appearance as Agatha Christie’s signature sleuth Poirot after 25 years in the ITV series, but fans were divided over the twists in the story.
The plotline was wildly different to any previous episode. Spoilers ahead! In the episode, Poirot is revealed to be the killer. The detective shoots a psychopath in order to protect others and goes on to take his own life, writing an apparent suicide note.
Speaking earlier in the day, Suchet told This Morning: “Its a big day for me and tonight I will be sitting down with my wife and we will watch the end.
“And my emotions today are extraordinary, they really are like a yo yo going up and down.
“It’s an odd thing because I didn’t expect it, so I didn’t know how to prepare for it.
“It’s grieving. I’m saying goodbye to a character I’ve been and have got to know over 25 years… it’s goodbye to a best friend as an actor, as someone I’ve got to know.”
The fans bid adieu to different old and ill Hercule Poirot tonight.
The ITV series ended with a flashback of him staring at the camera after writing his final death note.
