Exploring 5G Potential

How 5G can revolutionise wireless connectivity.

A number of shows dedicated to mobile, wireless connectivity, such as the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, have been launched since the start of 2018. One of their common denominator is that they had a lot of emphasis on 5G.

 

5G is the next wireless connectivity network that is expected to offer download speeds that are up to 100 times faster than 4G. But why is this important? A huge chunk of the population now has access to 4G and fibre broadband that exceed the speeds of a regular broadband connection.

 

Alex Quach, Intel's Vice President, Network Platforms Group, General Manager, 5G Strategy and Program Office, said that 5G is much more than just fast downloads – it has the potential to revolutionise every industry there is. It is what we need to power autonomous cars and to make remote surgery possible, among others, because it will allow us to send and receive data in split seconds.

 

5G comes with the promise of computing within the network rather than having to rely on either local and cloud capabilities. The technology will be able to offer ‘mini clouds’ which are much closer to end users, which translates to clearer and faster processing, localisation of data and measures that will actively prevent large packets of data clogging the entire network.
