Exeter is adopting cutting-edge methods to enhance the well-being of trees in the city center, focusing on the injection of air and charcoal around two iconic trees. Executed by Devon Tree Services on behalf of Exeter City Council, this initiative targets the 'Blitz' Holm oak atop Southernhay and a Wellingtonia in Dix’s Field. The 'Blitz' Holm oak, recently recognized as a nominee for the Woodland Trust’s Tree of the Year 2023, holds significance as one of the 13 most notable trees in the UK.
Using a high-pressure aerating tool, contractors delve into the soil around the trees, reaching a depth of 600mm in the feeding root area. Compaction in the vicinity of the 'Blitz' Holm oak, caused by nearby footpaths and roads, poses a threat by reducing oxygen and water supply, potentially leading to asphyxiation and death, hindering further root growth.
The injection of air and biochar serves as a remedy, enhancing soil structure and overall tree health. This innovative approach aims to ensure the sustained vitality of these beloved trees, allowing them to thrive for years to come. The environmental endeavor signifies a commitment to preserving and nurturing Exeter's natural heritage through advanced and eco-conscious techniques.
