If you have been planning to move soon or do a renovation then you have probably considered renting a portable storage container. Unlike hiring professional movers or renting a truck, renting a portable storage unit is a great choice for those looking for flexibility and a low cost moving option since you get the chance to move and store with just one solution. However, as much as convenient as it may seem, there are still tips that you will need to effectively pack your rented storage pods for maximum efficiency and safety. This is because how you pack and organize your portable storage unit will greatly determine how much of that space you will actually use. To get the most bang for your buck, here are the tips on how to effectively pack a portable storage unit.
1. Distribute furniture evenly.
When putting heavy items like furniture and large appliances, it is advisable to distribute them evenly and spread out the POD. For example, if you put one couch on the left side, you should also put another furniture with a similar weight on the right side. When all the weight is concentrated on a single side, it could easily damage your goods when they are on the road.
2. Use boxes that are similar in size.
If you have ever packed boxes before then you understand how frustrating it can be trying to stack irregular boxes without having them fall over. This is why it is advisable to look for boxes that are similar in size preferably cube-shaped boxes. When packing the boxes, remember to place the heavier ones on the bottom part of the container followed by the lighter ones.
3. Keep things you will need to take out first at the front.
If you are using portable storage units for additional storage or there are some items that you will need to remove from the POD first, ensure that you keep these items last and right at the entrance. By doing this, it will be easier to just pull them out when you want to use them. These can be essential items such as your kitchen supplies, some clothes, and your toiletries.
4. Install loading straps.
If the portable storage unit that you are renting will need to be transported to a new location, it will be crucial for you to have loading straps with you. Loading straps ensure that all your belongings do not shift thus remain secure when being in transit. Therefore, you should strap down all the items in the storage unit one section at a time. When you are completely done with one section, it is advisable to add additional packing straps to ensure that the section stays put.
5. Fill in the left space.
Finally, to get the most out of your rented portable storage unit, ensure that you fill in all the empty spaces that may be left between boxes or any other small items. Apart for making use of every inch in the pod, it will also improve stability and prevent any of your household items from shifting during transit.
Packing your home for moving or renovation is an art on its own. While there are a few individuals who will do it very well, most people will find it rather daunting. Now that you are familiar with these few tips and tricks on how to effectively pack PODs, we believe that you should be now all set and ready to make your move.
