A new report released by Tech UK has found that digital tech jobs in Edinburgh have increased by over three times the national average between 2014 and 2017. The number of jobs in the technology sector has increased from 6,814 in 2014 to 9,704 in 2017.
Digital tech turnover in Edinburgh was worth £1.14 billion in 2017 and has contributed £1.3billion gross value added (GVA). Glasgow, on the other hand, had 1.05bn of digital turnover during the same year and has contributed £1.31billion GVA. Dundee, which was also identified as one of the key tech clusters in Scotland, produced £181million of tech turnover, contributing £205million to GVA.
According to a survey carried out among the tech companies in each city, the strengths in Edinburgh are helpful tech community, an appealing area and the proximity of a university. The top three challenges, on the other hand, are a lack of awareness of the local tech community as well as limited access to funding and tech talents.
Glasgow’s strengths are in data and space technology and being a hub for tech meetups. Meanwhile, Edinburgh was recognised for its culture of collaboration and Dundee for its computer science and gaming courses.
