Soap star to leave following controversial storyline...

Eastenders actress Samantha Womack has reportedly quit the BBC One soap following her part in the controversial cot death storyline.

The soap star, who plays Ronnie Branning on the programme, is said to have handed bosses a handwritten resignation letter when she first read the script back in November.

The storyline in question sees Ronnie find her baby dead from Sudden Infant Death, also known as cot death.

Branning is then shown swapping her child with Kat Moon's son, Tommy.

The actress has previously spoken about how difficult she found filming the scenes:

"I couldn't stop crying when we were filming the scenes where Ronnie finds her dead baby. I couldn't switch off when I returned home every day."

The episode caused controversy among viewers when it was aired over New Year, with nearly 3,500 people calling in to complain.
