East Dunbartonshire’s Child Protection Committee and Youth Services are raising awareness on how to be safe online through its annual Safer Internet Day. The event, which took place on Tuesday 8 February 2022, explored respect and relationships online and coincided with Young Scot's DigiKnow Championship Awards.
The team delivers the award to schools to support young people to become more resilient and to learn how to protect themselves and their devices while using the internet. The team also teaches young individuals the positive and negative impacts of technology use on their well-being.
Councillor Andrew Polson, said, “This Award is a great opportunity for young people to get the very best out of technology, whilst being fully aware of the dangers they can encounter when online. The pandemic has highlighted just how necessary technology has become, for learning, working, banking and online shopping, so it is vital our young people are cyber resilient.
“The Award also sits on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework at Level 4, with 4 credit points attached. So our young people are not only learning vital life skills, they are also gaining qualifications at the same time. It’s a fantastic programme and I think our young people will gain a lot from it.”
Aidan, a sixth year pupil at St Ninian’s High School said, "I'm really looking forward to working towards the DigiAward, learning how to get the most out of the internet whilst protecting my personal data and information. I am aware that spending too much time on social media can have a negative impact on physical and mental health. I am keen to learn more about how I can limit my time online. I believe that the DigiAward will be valuable for every pupil to develop internet safety awareness and cyber resilience."
