A 52-year-old surfer has survived a shark attack by punching the creature – just as world champion Mick Fanning did two weeks ago. However, Craig Ison suffered serious leg and arm injuries during an attack that took place around 6am local time on Friday at Evans Head, New South Wales.
Reports said that Ison spotted the shark early on and managed to warn a friend to get out of the water. As he paddled back to the shore, he was bitten on the leg. He then punched the creature and made it to the shore where a passerby applied a tourniquet to his leg.
Mr Ison’s friend said: it was "like watching a Mick Fanning replay".
"We were just paddling out to get a wave and he's called out: go back in, there's a shark.”
"I paddled to him but by then he was on his board and paddling back."
Two weeks ago, triple world champion Fanning was attacked during a competition that was being filmed live for TV.
The 34-year-old said: “I was just sitting there and I felt something just get stuck in my leg rope, and I was kicking trying to get it away.
“I just saw fins. I didn’t see teeth. I was waiting for the teeth.
“I instantly just jumped away. It kept coming at my board and I was kicking and screaming. I punched it in the back.”
